What if your first love was your only love? When Molly is diagnosed with a life changing illness, it feels like her whole world has come crashing down. She hopes the news will make her marriage to Sam stronger. But why does Molly always call best friend Ed in a crisis? Ed. The very same Ed that Molly fell in love with at a party when they were teenagers, underneath a star-filled sky. Then life took them in very different directions. They could only ever be friends. Suddenly Molly starts to question every decision she’s ever made. What if they could turn back the clock? Back to the very beginning. When the only certainty they shared was each other

Award winning author Ella Harper has returned with another heart tugging book that like her debut novel, ‘Pieces Of Me’ will leave the reader in pieces.

Friends Ed and Molly have known each other since they were young adults and spent a drunken, hazy night where they sat underneath the stars and got to know each other. They quickly become best friends, being there and confiding in each other, occasionally getting a bit closer but never taking the leap, for the fear of ruining their friendship. Until, one night they take the drunken plunge, both happy that they have moved forward in the relationship, then Ed is called away on emergency family business and Molly never sees him again for many years to come.

The story is primarily written in the present tense and is see from Ed and Molly’s perspective, which I found gave the story an interesting and compelling insight, as both characters struggled with their emotions and the sudden issues that they were dealing with.

The inclusion of flashbacks to the story, gives a lot of depth and background to the friendship and shows the keys moments their lives when they were really there for each other, I thought these scenes in the story were particularly poignant and entertaining as the two characters interacted with each other and battled with mixed emotions.

The main element of the story is Molly being diagnosed with Parkinson’s and the huge impact this has on her life and who she turns to most when times are particularly rough, even though she is married, her husband Sam is married to his work and often Molly feels alone.

For me Molly, is a wonderful character, a breath of fresh air with a zest for life and a creative flair, unfortunately being married, she seems to have contained her creativity and when Ed, reappears in her life, she immediately becomes a radiant and more active character. Ed, is complex, he’s a romantic, who longs to write the next big novel and his life has been far from easy as he dealt with his difficult mother, I thought both characters complimented each other wonderfully.

An engaging story from the first page, ‘The Years Of Loving You’, is a beautifully and wonderfully written about first love and second chances, a must read for all those who believe in, right time, right place.
