Trauma By Dylan Young
‘Trauma’ is the latest book by Dylan Young.
Cameron Todd is recovering from a serious brain injury. A trauma suffered the same night his girlfriend Emma plunged to her death from a clifftop. The damage erases all memory of the incident and his previous life. Both the police and Emma’s relatives are hunting for someone to blame and question whether his amnesia is a convenient fabrication. Desperate to understand what happened that fateful day, self-doubt creeps in when Cameron learns his relationship with Emma might not have been picture-perfect. Is he a victim, or the perpetrator? Can he trust his injured brain’s version of events? Or will unearthing the truth reveal something far more sinister?
Trauma is the latest book by Dylan Young and it’s a thrilling story set during the Covid pandemic.
The story is primarily seen through the narrative of Cameron Todd, who’s recovering from a serious head trauma after his girlfriend was killed whilst in Turkey on holiday. Cameron remembers nothing from before the accident including his girlfriend, Emma’s last moments before her death, making him the prime suspect in the crime.
The story follows on with Cameron trying to move on with life, recover from his injuries and having to relearn all the simple tasks that he once took for granted. But as he tries to move forward, he keeps having recurring memories that don’t make sense and he’s trying to piece them together, all whilst dealing with a pandemic.
I loved Cameron, he’s sweet and witty towards his illness, he’s easily confused with words and uses his humour to make people feel at ease with his condition. He’s determined to get his life back on track, recover his independence as well as finally find out happen what happened that fateful night in Turkey. But when a woman called Nicole comes into life, Cameron begins to question his life and relationship before the accident.
I really enjoyed this story, it flowed at a nice pace that really kept the reader engaged, particularly with Cameron’s unreliable memory that made him an fascinating character. I loved his personality and how he was able to poke fun at himself and his friends. But the element of his unreliable narrative added a note of suspense to the book, as people appeared in his life and accounting memories that didn’t make sense. The story is also seen from the police woman investigating the case and she has her own views on Cameron’s condition which adds an interesting twist to the story.
An engaging thriller with an great lead character, ‘Trauma’ is a gripping thriller set in the midst of the pandemic that made for great reading.
