Single mum Cally’s life is all about her little girl Stella. She’s resigned to the fact that the only romance she’s going to get is from the rom-coms she watches, and with her busy job and her daughter, she doesn’t have time to think about love. But life becomes very tough when Stella gets sick. Balancing her job as a recipe writer and looking after Stella is all consuming so when Cally meets handsome baker Jago the last thing she wants to do is fall in love, especially when she’s been badly burnt by a Prince Charming from the past. Can laid back charming Jago unlock Cally’s frozen heart and help her find tyre love and magic under the mistletoe?
I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and if it hadn’t been for life and Christmas getting in the way, than I am sure I would have finished the book sooner.
The story is quite a festive and poignant one as single mother Cally moves to the quaint village of Sticklepond hoping to save money for her seriously ill little girl Stella. A stranger amongst the villagers, she finds a companionship with handsome newcomer and cromquembouche creator Jago who along with the local businesses and loyal people help raise funding for Stella’s life-saving operation in Boston.
Cally, the lead character of the story is a lovely heartwarming lady, who the reader can immediately connect with, desperate for her little girl to finally have a fulfilling life, she is always busy, juggling hospital appointments, writing her bakery column and maintaining constant fundraising ideas for Stella’s surgery, all whilst being a single mother. Thankfully Stella, has the help and support of her artistic and reclusive mother, Ma who is a somewhat scatty character who had a few interesting lines in the story. Stella, is an adorable character who is wonderfully wise beyond her years with her obsession with fairies and angels, she regularly reflects on life but throws in some innocent musings that does make the reader smile with either sadness or amusement. Meanwhile the handsome Jago, adds an element of charm to the story, with his thoughtfulness and gentle nature, it was not to fall for him with Cally along the way especially with finding a man who create such delicious sweet delights, it was hard not to be envious of their sweet relationships.
The story is primarily seen through the eyes of Cally, but there are occasionally chapters about Jago as he also settles into the small village and deals with his new friendship with the leading lady.
As the story is of quite a sad nature about sick children, there is the added element of humour with both Cally and Jago’s exes suddenly reappearing on the scene. Aimee is a socialite, who jilted her ex fiancée Jago before going off to Dubai with a used car sales man, discovering that the grass is not always greener on the other side, she quickly returns with her tail between her legs, oblivious to the fact that Jago has moved on she is determined to win him back. Alternating between pity and bitchiness, scenes with Aimee are particularly interesting. Whilst Cally’s ex Adam, disappeared not long after Cally told him she was pregnant, having expressed no interest in Stella, Cally is bemused by his sudden return.
A captivating Christmas story about a small community coming together for the sake of a small child, ‘Wish Upon A Star’ is an enchanting story of love, friendship and a mothers strong desire to save after her little girl.
