It’s A Wonderful Life Book Tour – Seven Things You Don’t Know About It’s A Wonderful Life

Seven Things You Don’t Know About It’s a Wonderful Life

1 It is not based on the film! (I based Last Christmas on It’s a Wonderful Life which is one of my favourite Christmas films, but this story is very different.

2 It does have an angel in it. She’s very little and she’s lost. She is also the heroine of a picture book. Make of that what you will.

3 Although Christmas is a time to be happy with your loved ones, It’s a Wonderful Life starts with a bang, when the Holroyd family experience the Christmas from Hell. Here’s hoping yours is much much better!

4 It’s also a story about the road not taken… when I was 16 I foolishly thought I was in love with a man, who I now realise was very toxic. When I met my husband that experience made me recognise a good relationship when I saw it. My heroine, Beth, has been in a similar position. But then her toxic ex-lover turns up in her life. I wouldn’t give my ex the time of day now, but how will Beth feel about it?

5 You might have noticed that far too much fiction rarely features BAME characters, and recently a damning report showed that the publishing industry isn’t doing enough about it. As a result of that report publishers are now trying to address this issue, and I think it’s vital that white middle class writers do the same. We do run the risk of making mistakes, but I wanted my hero to be black, and a head teacher. We need to see BAME characters who aren’t stereotyped. I hope I haven’t got it wrong, because basically Daniel is a hero I can fall in love with, and the problems he has relating to both his estranged dad and son, are common to all families.

6 I’ve also written a lesbian love story for the first time ever. For the reasons mentioned above, and because it just came out that way. Again, I hope I’ve got it right, but love is love in whatever form it comes…

7 I didn’t want to write a puppy in this story…but miraculously there is a puppy cameo. What can I say? It’s Christmas.
