Is it diamonds – or is it Amy? First Tess was a girl with a plan. Then she was a girl with a dream. Now she’s a girl who’s come back to earth with a bump. When the opportunity arises to join her best friend, Amy, in New York for Christmas, Tess jumps at the chance. The only fly in ointment is that Nick, the man who broke her heart, lives there. And Charlie, the man she turned down, has just started talking to her again. And she has just four days to take a photo for a competition that could save her career. But aside from that, everything is going to be great: it’ll be the best Christmas ever. Won’t it
Our favourite budding photographer is back and this time, Tess is having her latest adventure in New York. As Christmas lures closer, Tess is unimpressed and unhappy with spending Christmas alone and eating her mother’s horrible brussel sprouts. So, when Tess’s best friend Amy, invites her to New York for a Christmas vacation, Tess throws caution to the wind and packs her camera bag for the bright lights of the cosmopolitan city. But just as Tess becomes accustomed to the cold weather and the New York way of life, she sees Nick, the man who broke her heart and the man she still loves. Hoping to distract herself from heartbreak, Tess decides to embark on a photographic competition and spends her time trying to find the perfect photograph opportunity as well as prepare for the wedding of the decade as her good friends, Domenico and Kekipi tie the knot.
The story begins in the present moment, as everyone prepares for the big wedding day, and then disaster strikes causing the story to go back in time, to two and half weeks ago, when Tess was a lot less happier and confident version of herself, as she assisted a bratty photographer and regularly thought about the one who got way. Rescue, comes in the shape of scatty and outspoken Amy who persuades Tess to come to New York and help her get ready for the return of Al Bennett and his first fashion range in a long while. With Amy’s mad antic’s, New York’s majestic skyline, Tess just about manages to get her life in order, that is until she catches a glimpse of Nick and once again, her heart breaks.
In Lindsey’s signature style, the story flows in a quick fashion, with witty narrative, dialogue and entertaining scenarios that do make for enjoyable reading. Since, the very start of this series, I have loved the characters, particularly Tess, she’s quiet with a big heart who regularly finds herself in awkward situations and she’s really a girl that I find myself relating to. Her friend, Amy with her eccentricity adds an injection of humour and wit to the tale, whilst quietly spoken and caring Al provides a wise figure in the modern romance.
Filled with sass, humour, a few old faces as well as some sexy men, ‘A Girl’s Best Friend’ is another smart and laugh out loud story from Lindsey and just like her previous offerings, leaves the reader begging for more.
