The story is written solely in the first person and is seen from the perspective of sixteen year old Maren, a quiet and timid girl who harbours a terrible secret, a secret so terrible that it makes her mother abandon her leaving her only with her birth certificate and some money. Lonely and scared, Maren then goes off on her own journey, hoping to find her father and hopefully get an explanation as why to she is the way she is. As she travels along, Maren encounters some strangers along the way including Lee, a caring, older boy who is like her in so many ways. Together, the pair of them embark on a tentative friendship confiding and helping each other along the way.

This story is incredibly dark and unsettling as it is primarily about cannibalism and it’s hard to have a dislike towards Maren as she is the bad guy of the story but she is quite a sweet and caring girl, who does try to keep people at distance so no-one gets hurt, so she does live quite a lonely existence and that does make for sad reading, as people would get close to her unaware of the danger they were putting themselves in and she had to deal with the guilt and repercussions of her actions.

A unique, coming of age story about family, love, growing up and finding yourself, ‘Bones And All’ is a stunning story with an original tale and an intriguing lead that made the book impossible to put down and with its strange combination of the sweet and the macabre, this book is perfect for fans of horror.
