Dream A Little Dream By Giovanna Fletcher

Sarah is doing just fine. Sure she’s been single for the last five years, and has to spend an uncomfortable amount of time around her ex-boyfriend, his perfect new girlfriend and all their mutual friends. And yes, her job as a PA to one of the most disgusting men in London is mind-numbingly tedious and her career is a constant disappointment to her mother. But it’s really okay. She’s happy (ish).
So it’s not surprising that when Sarah starts dreaming about a handsome stranger, she begins to look forward to falling asleep every night. Reality isn’t nearly as exciting. That is until her dream-stranger makes an unexpected real-life appearance, leaving Sarah questioning everything she thought she wanted. Because no one ever really finds the person of their dreams… do they?
‘Dream A Little Dream’ is Giovanna’s third novel and just like her previous books, ‘Billy And Me’ and ‘You’re The One That I Want’ the story is another captivating and light-hearted read that truly makes for sweet reading.
The story is solely seen through the narrative of Sarah, a young woman, who like a lot of women in their twenties is in a bit of rut. Stuck in a job that she is unhappy with, she is single after her boyfriend of years Dan broke up with her, only to have found love with another woman, Sarah has to put on a brave face, whilst Dan flaunts his new woman in their group of friends. Whilst Sarah tries to move on with her life, it’s hard when she constantly reminded that she is alone, whilst the love of life has rapidly moved on. Heartbroken and unhappy, Sarah finds unlikely solace in her dreams. In her dreams, Sarah meets a handsome man, who has reappeared from her university years, Brett. Charming and exciting, Brett provides Sarah with an escape from her mundane life and when he suddenly appears in her life for real, Sarah finds herself experiencing new and exciting emotions as ‘Real Brett’ stirs a new feeling inside just like ‘Dream Brett’ and provides a shoulder when troubles arise.
The story is a magical and whimsical read that I really enjoyed. Sarah, is a fabulous character, witty and warm, she is the perfect friend, always there to help during the hard times. But unlike many women, she is able to deal with her ex-boyfriends new girlfriend, although she is resentful and hurt, she hides it well and is able to enjoy the news when Dan announces his engagement. She is funny with her ways and I particularly enjoyed the interactions between her and ‘Real Brett’ especially after her dreams. The dreams make for fantastical reading and usually took place in wonderful and exciting places, that did make me sigh with delight. As well, as the fabulous Sarah, Brett is a delicious lead, funny and generous with his Nanna’s jam, he adds an injection of chivalry to the romantic story, Sarah’s cast of friends are also entertaining reading, as they provided humour at their regular pub quizzes.
The characters are believable, relatable and the story is written in a fresh style, that flows at a lovely pace that really reels you in. With an interesting plot and great characters, ‘Dream A Little Dream’ is a tender and fun love story, packed with fun and frolics, this book made for the perfect, saucy escapism read and is one of the many reasons why, Giovanna Fletcher is one of my favourite authors.
