Meet Audrey: an ordinary teenage girl with not so ordinary problems. Aside from her completely crazy and chaotic family, she suffers from an anxiety disorder which makes talking to her brother’s hot new best friend a bit of a challenge. But Audrey has a plan to help her face her fears and take on the world again. First stop: Starbucks.

Sophie Kinsella is one of my favourite authors, I’m a huge fan of the Shopaholic series but it’s ‘Can You Keep A Secret’ that was my favourite of all, but now I’ve quickly added ‘Finding Audrey’ to that list since I’ve fallen in love with Sophie’s debut YA novel.

The story is seen solely through the narrative of Audrey, a trouble 14 year old girl who wears dark glasses even though she doesn’t have a sight problem. She was bullied at school and has retreated into her shell hiding from the world and is unable to communicate with people, but with the help of her therapist Dr. Sarah, she is wanting to fight her demons and create a fly on the wall documentary about her family.

Audrey is a fabulous character, she is witty, caring and has a unique way of behaving. Right from the very beginning I felt a deep sense of empathy for her as she tried to explain for her behaviour and as the story progressed and she developed, I felt so proud of her. Her family are fantastic and give her documentary plenty of material with her mothers obsession with the Daily Mail and her constant battle with her eldest son Frank about his gaming obsession. The addition of Linus, Audrey’s crush adds a touch of romance to the novel and I couldn’t help but develop a liking for him myself, the way he acted around Audrey. I loved how the story was seen solely through the dark glasses of Audrey, but I felt the inclusion of the script from her fly on the wall documentary gave the story a wonderful injection of humour and insight to the lives and behaviour of her crazy family.

With a bright and vibrant cover, this book is packed with humour, wit and a wonderful collection of characters that made it an addictive read, ‘Finding Audrey’ is a coming of age story about development, finding your place in life and is definitely a character that I would like to see more off.
