When Ana Watson’s brother ditches a high school trip to run wild at Washingcon, type-A Ana knows that she must find him or risk her last shot at freedom from her extra-controlling parents. In her desperation, she’s forced to enlist the last person she’d ever want to spend time with—slacker Zak Duquette—to help find her brother before morning comes. But over the course of the night, while being chased by hordes of costumed Vikings and zombies, Ana and Zak begin to open up to each other. Soon, what starts as the most insane nerdfighter manhunt transforms into so much more….

‘The Improbable Theory Of Ana And Zak’ is the perfect book to get you out of a reading slump, as I gobbled this witty read up in one day.

The story is written through the narrative of two high school teenagers Zak and Ana and gives us a great insight into how they act and feel tonwards each other and those around them. Zak, a witty young man who has to give up his opportunity to go to science fiction convention to take part in his schools quiz bowl as punishment for cheating. Angry at the world for his punishment, he finds a little bit of comfort that Ana will be there, a moody and quiet girl who finds himself drawn to. Pissed off that they are both at the quiz, the two of them form an unlikely kinship over the space of the night as they go in search of Ana’s younger brother Clayton who disappears to the convention.

The two characters are the polar opposites of each other. Zak is laid back and prefers to live in world of mystical creatures then face up to going to university and dwell on the sadness in the background whereas Ana lives in a world of constant stress, with strict parents who have already decided her life for her, she lives in fear that she will let them down and end up like her older sister. Whereas her younger brother Clayton is wise beyond his years but still has an innocence and naivety that keeps him young at heart.

The story is crammed into the one venue, a sweaty convention centre where people share a mutual love for science fiction and come together for this annual event but for Zak and Ana, the evening is packed with unnecessary and unfortunate drama for the pair that makes for delicious reading. Wittily written with relatable and fun characters that you can feel an immense empathy for, ‘The Improbable Theory Of Ana And Zak’, is an upbeat, unpredictable and captivating story that had me chuckling throughout.
