Happy Place By Emily Henry
‘Happy Place’ is the latest book by Emily Henry and it’s a lovely story of friendships, nostalgia and moving on.
Harriet and Wyn are the perfect couple – they go together like bread and butter, gin and tonic, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. Every year, they take a holiday from their lives to drink far too much wine with their favourite people in the world. Except this year, they are lying through their teeth, because Harriet and Wyn broke up six months ago. And they still haven’t told anyone. But the cottage is for sale so this is the last time they’ll all be here together. They can’t bear to break their best friends’ hearts so they’ll fake it for one more week. But how can you pretend to be in love – and get away with it – in front of the people who know you best?
The story is seen through the narrative of Harriet, who’s gone on holidays with her best friends Cleo and Megan. The trio have been close since university, and also on the trip are their partners including Wynn, her ex fiancé, although no one knows that they’re no longer together. It’s whilst on this holiday, that the pair finally confront their problems whilst the rest of the gang say goodbye to age old traditions, an unexpected wedding as well as face old ghosts.
The story is written in a past and present narrative and it makes for lovely reading as Harriet and Wynn become friends before tentatively progressing into a couple and falling in love. It’s also sad to read the breakdown of the relationship as it’s obvious that there is still a lot of love for each other.
Emily’s books are beautifully written, they’re fresh, lighthearted with a sense of nostalgia as the gang reminisce on old times. The characters are a lovely mix of personalities and I really found myself relating to Harriet as she found her way through life.
Fun, romantic and packed with charm, ‘Happy Place’ by Emily is a lovely story to get lost in.
