Recent graduate Ellie has debt, an unpaid internship and three flatmates who left her with the single room to match her single status. That’s ok. She doesn’t want a boyfriend anyway. She wants several. But as Ellie tests out every new dating craze she’s realising that the ultimate single lifestyle might not be that easy after al. If the women on Sex and the City got dates on a daily basis, and even the more normal-looking girls on Girls, then why wasn’t I? If I wanted to live the fun, twenty something life I was destined to live, I was going to have to up my game.
‘Not That Easy’ is a truly enjoyable story which follows the life of Greek woman Ellie Kolstakis who is looking to become more experienced sexually, given up on the idea of finding the one, she wants to explore her sexual side and with the help of her friends joins various internet dating websites. But her dates, are far from boring with nosebleeds, face biters and men with better Brazilians than her. As she goes from disastrous date from the next, her tyrant boss asks Ellie to share her experiences in a weekly column highlighting the issues of being a single girl in the city. But then one day, Ellie meets Nick, a man from New Zealand who is coming to terms with a recent breakup and isn’t looking for a relationship so they embark on a passionate affair but as they get closer, Ellie begins to wonder whether it’s love or sex that she is really after.
For me, this story is an eye opener, with its crude and rude dialogue and hilarious scenarios, it was hard not to put it down. Ellie is an outspoken and passionate young woman, she craves sex and intimacy and has no issues with sharing this with people, she has a voice and wants to be heard much to the shame of her traditional Greek mother. Her dates are hilarious and some of the positions she gets herself into (and I don’t mean sexually) genuinely make for laugh for out loud moments.
An honest account of dating in the bustling city of London, where social media rules and nothing is private, ‘Not That Easy’ highlights the differences between men and women casually dating and the stigmas attached. Fun from the beginning, this story is a cleverly written breath of fresh air that will have you looking at relationships differently.
