Pieces Of My Heart by Sinead Moriarty

Pieces Of My Heart

Pieces of my Heart is the first book that I have read by best selling Irish author Sinead Moriarty and after reading this funny yet turbulent read I know understand why she is a number one writer.

The story focuses on Ava who has many roles in her busy life, as a mother, wife, daughter and business woman, she is so busy helping other people with their problems that she never seems to have time for herself.

With two teenage daughters, her life is never boring. Ali is the eldest of the two, a shy beautiful girl who succeeds in everything and to the outside world she is content whereas younger Sarah is outspoken, full of confidence and never lost for words. Her husband Paul is rarely around as his time is constantly occupied with his bar and her out of control father has just moved in with her and is discovering a new love for life after his second wife passed away.

Ava’s life is non-stop as she always has someone to look after or something to sort, fortunately although life is busy, everything is good. Until Ali starts to go out with David, the heartthrob of the school, she is in awe of him but one day a new girl, Tracey starts at the school, with her catwalk appearance and skinny frame she could easily be a model then David suddenly dumps Ali and starts seeing Tracey. Distraught with the humiliation of the public break up, Ali changes, becoming reclusive and starts to obsess with food. Ava is worried sick about Ali but every-time she tries to talk to her she snaps at her, it’s like she becomes a different person. Then Ava’s best friend and business partner, Sally gently points out that Ali might have an eating disorder and finally after struggling for weeks with Ali, she is finally sent to a clinic after she is diagnosed with anorexia.

The story then follows the family as they all try to lead normal lives, carrying on with work, school-life or in her Ava’s father’s case falling in love with a Polish lap dancer. Pieces of my Heart had me enthralled from the start. filled with wonderful unique characters especially Sarah, Ava’s daughter who always had something to say. Sinead has a wonderful knack of dealing with such a sensitive issue in a delicate yet informative way, it also showed the vulnerability of teenagers and no matter how young or old you are, heartbreak is never easy to deal with.

Pieces of my Heart is a great book, filled with laughter, tears and shows just how important a family is and how they can pull together in a crisis and is well worthy of being a Number 1. bestseller.
