Sister by Rosamund Lupton
Sister is the heart wrenching story of sisters Beatrice and Tess, similar in appearances but extraordinarily different elsewhere.
Beatrice, the eldest of the sisters lives in New York, having found the perfect job in design with her comfortable apartment and her fiancé Todd. She is protective and caring of her younger and wilder sister Tess, who lives in a grotty, damp flat studying an art degree whilst having an illicit affair with her tutor when she becomes pregnant. Life is good for the sisters, they communicate regularly via emails and telephone until one day, their mother phones Beatrice in the middle of a party and tells her that Tess has gone missing.
Beatrice immediately returns to London, to help in the quest to find Tess hoping to find her younger sister safe and sound but nothing can prepare her, when Tess is found dead in the toilets of the local park.
Everyone is convinced that Tess committed suicide after she lost her baby and was diagnosed with post-natal depression, but Beatrice is convinced that her sister would never take her own life and is determined to find the truth and prove everyone wrong. Whilst on this journey of reliving the last few days of Tess’s life, Beatrice discovers that her death was a lot more sinister and twisted than she could have ever anticipated.
This is a remarkable book for a debut novel. From the start, this book had me hooked. Throughout Beatrice’s journey to uncover the truth, she meets so many people that everyone is a suspect and you are constantly guessing if they had something to do with Tess’s death.
This book is a truly haunting read, as Beatrice reflects on her life without Tess and she reminisces, remembering little things from when they are children, there is a vivid sense of loneliness as she tries to move on. The twist at the end was a wonderful surprise, that made me think in life nothing is never what it seems.
As winner of Piakus Super-Lead Fiction Title of 2010, Rosamund Lupton is definitely an author for keep an eye on.
