Maggie and Sylvie are perfect strangers: two very different women living very different lives on opposites coasts. But they share more in common than they could ever imagine. Both women have beautiful children on the verge of flying the nest, a house they worked hard for and a devoted husband. Both women think their lives are secure, but they couldn’t be more wrong.
For each is about to discover a secret that will shake their world to the very core, throwing into doubt everything they thought they knew and bringing Maggie and Sylvie together in the most unexpected way.
I have been a fan of Jane Green for the number of years, ever since I read ‘Jemima J’ I fell for her witty and snappy style of writing that handled stories of heartbreak and betrayal with such sensitivity and class.
Once I started ‘The Accidental Husband’ I quickly became addicted to the story of two very different women from different sides of the coast but both going through the same drama.
Initially the story is seen through the eyes of Sylvie, a woman with a creative flair, who adores her husband Mark, but fails to live up to her mother’s expectations and worries about her daughter Eve, as she prepares to leave to go to university. Even though her life has a few bumps in the road, she has found her soulmate in Mark and can never imagine her life without him in it. Meanwhile, Maggie lives the high society life, chairing committees, the epiphany of a Stepford wife, were rules are adhered to and everything has to be perfect.
But one day, the perfect lives of both women come crashing down around them, as they discover that they have been living a lie and nothing is as it seems. Trying to come to terms with the scandal, that they suddenly find themselves in the middle of, they find solace and understanding in one another.
I adored this book. I was hooked into the lives of Sylvie and Maggie, both very different characters but it was obvious that a disaster was looming on the horizon for them, but in true Jane Green style, intrigue and mystery was evident from the very start making the tale a compelling and poignant story.
‘The Accidental Husband’ is a modern coming of age story that is cleverly written, blending issues of betrayal, illness and teenage angst together, which can make for heartfelt reading, as we join two women on their rediscovery of their paths in life.
A wonderful return from the British author, ‘The Accidental Husband’ is definitely Jane Green at her very best.
