‘The Anniversary’ is the latest book by Laura Marshall.

On 15th June 1994, Travis Green – husband, father, upstanding citizen – walked through the streets of Hartstead and killed eleven of his neighbours. Laura’s debut novel called ‘Friend Request’ was an epic debut that I absolutely adored and her second book is just as gripping.

The story is seen through perspective of Cassie, who as a child witnessed a terrible tragedy. Now 25 years later, back home as a new mother and dealing with her mother’s dementia, Cassie is approached by an investigative journalist wanting to write an article about the massacre that hit the town 25 years ago, bringing up new memories and emotions.

I loved this book and it was just gripping as Laura’s debut. Laura’s has a skill of creating female leads that are both fascinating and unreliable, so this makes the story gripping and a fast paced read, especially at the speed I read it!

Cassie is under a lot of stress with her mother’s illness and a new baby, she’s tired and on edge and is occasionally unable to know what’s real and imagined. As the past is brought up, she’s riddled with doubt and as she and the journalist become targeted as they look into retelling the past, she begins to fear for her life.

Another thrilling and twisted book from Laura that packs a punch of an ending that I read in one sitting, ‘The Anniversary’ is absolutely addictive and makes for a thrilling psychological story.
