On a snowy December evening, Sam Jermyn steps into the life of bespoke hat maker Ava Blissham. Sparks fly, and not necessarily the good ones. When Sam commissions Ava to make a hat for someone special to him she makes a promise that will change her life. She just doesn’t know it yet. Ava needs this job – she’s struggling to make ends meet, her ex-boyfriend is a bully, and she’s desperate for distraction because no one dreads Christmas like Ava does. But soon Ava finds herself reluctantly needing something from Sam. He’s quick to help, but she’s in for a nasty shock… Will she be able to keep her promise? And if she does, might this be the Christmas her dreams come true?
It might be two months until Christmas, but it’s never too early to curl up with a festive book, particularly when the weather has turned colder and the nights are becoming darker earlier.
This story is seen through the perspective of Ava and Sam, who meet one night on a night out with mutual friends. The two of them are drawn to each other but Ava finds herself drawing away as her best friend Izz likes Sam.
Sam finds Ava fascinating and mysterious with her creative abilities to create amazing hats from nothing and loves her huge heart as she creates the perfect hat for his unwell mother. Whilst Ava admires Sam with his huge heart and quiet determination.
The story flows at a sweet and tender pace as the pair of them embark on a new relationship, getting to know each other, as Ava helps Sam deal with his mothers illness and Sam helps Ava create awareness for her milliner business, by setting up events and clients for her. I thought Ava and Sam made for a delightful couple, both kind and generous, they look out for one another as they are going through difficult times leading up to Christmas.
Ava is an interesting character, with her huge personality, she’s a proud woman and refuses to take financial handouts when her funds are low, instead she works hard and takes on more challenging projects.
The story is prominently a love story, but there are also the inclusion of more serious issues in the Christmas tale, such as cancer as well as online abuse, when Ava finds herself victim to an ex boyfriend who has photographs of her from their time together, he uses these photographs as leverage but Ava wants to put that part of her life behind her and is scared that the images will be made public.
‘The Christmas Promise’ is a sweetly written story that made for warmhearted reading, a story of love, life and new beginnings, this poignant tale set against the backdrop of Christmas will have you giggling and crying throughout.
