The Geography Of You And Me By Jennifer E. Smith

Owen lives in the basement. Lucy lives on the 24th floor. But when the power goes out in the midst of a New York heatwave, they find themselves together for the first time: stuck in a lift between the 10th and 11th floors. As they await help, they start talking…

The brief time they spend together leaves a mark. And as their lives take them to Edinburgh and San Francisco, to Prague and to Portland they can’t shake the memory of the time they shared. Postcards cross the globe when they themselves can’t, as Owen and Lucy experience the joy – and pain – of first love.

And as they make their separate journeys in search of home, they discover that sometimes it is a person rather than a place that anchors you most in the world.

With a striking and nocturnal themed cover set against the backdrop of the New York skyline, ‘The Geography of You And Me’ is a tender and sweet story that is easy to fall in love with.

The story is seen through the narrative of teenage characters Lucy and Owen who meet when the lift in their building suddenly stops. Once rescued, they spend the night together chatting and finding out things about each other as the rest of New York is in a panicked chaos due to the sudden blackout. Oblivious to the drama below them, they begin a new bubble where only they exist and form a new friendship as they confide about their thoughts and feelings. But once the electricity is back on and life continues as Lucy travels to the UK with her family and Owen goes on a road trip with his grieving father both mourning the sudden loss of their wife and mother.

But the young couple decide to remain in touch through the medium of tacky postcards with one line sentences and emails as they move in with life but their hearts still belong to that fateful night in New York and proves that absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder.

In Jennifer’s laid-back style of writing, she has once again created two characters that you have a genuine connection and empathy for. Two lost souls trying to find their place, Owen with his recent loss and Lucy’s lonely life as her parents go off on regular travels. They see a mutual understanding in each other and we are fortunate to join them on this heartwarming adventure.

‘The Geography Of You And Me’ is the perfect story to curl up with, warmly written with sweet characters, Jennifer E. Smith has written another delightful story about first love and is fast becoming one of my favourite Young Adult authors.
