The Rule Of Three By Sam Ripley
‘The Rule Of Three’ is the latest book by Sam Ripley.
I didn’t believe in the Rule of Three. Not at first. It was just one of those urban myths you hear about all the time. A story my boyfriend told me about a girl cursed by the number three. A girl whose parents had killed themselves after her sibling had died in an accident. Which meant that she was doomed to die too because that’s the Rule of Three. Bad things always happen in threes, they say, and they are right. Because it’s happening again. But this time the curse is coming for me. And worst of all? It’s coming for you, too.
If you like your psychological thrillers with a side of supernatural to it, then ‘The Rule Of Three’ is just the book for you!
The story is written like a diary entry from three young women called Amy, Ila and Eve. All three women have lost their family in terrible circumstances and fear that they are next. Between them, they try to investigate the urban legend, each in turn becoming part of it – to see if it actually is a curse or whether there’s a serial killer at large.
It’s hard to go into much detail about this story, as it would be very easy to give something away, but saying that, this book is a unique tale with a clever plot line with twists and really grabbed my attention.
Throughout the story, there’s an underlying sense of doom and foreboding that something terrible is going to happen and this continues right down to the final page. The story tackles tough topics such as suicide, addiction and mental health as all three women have to deal with tragic consequences in their lives. Consequently, their names are all three letters which adds another twist to the story.
I loved this book, it’s gripping, dark and really keeps the reader on their toes as they along with the women try to figure out what’s going on. It’s set over a period of time, when the introduction of smartphones came into effect and I really felt this suited the tone of the story, as the women were limited to resource materials about curses and legends and had to resort to spending hours in library researching through microfiche machines.
A brilliantly written story packed with tension, paranoia and drama, ‘The Rule Of Three’ reads like a ‘Final Destination’ film, no matter how much you try to avoid it, death will always get you in the end!
