Forget about having it all. Sometimes you just want to leave it all behind. Audrey is often seized by the urge to walk out of her house without looking back – but she can’t possibly do that. She is a single parent. She is needed. She has a job, a home, responsibilities…and a slothful teenage son’s pants to pick up. But no one likes being taken for granted – Audrey least of all – so the time has come for drastic action. And no one’s going to stand in her way…
Fiona Gibson is back with another tale of an overworked and unappreciated mother, who longs to get away from it all. Away from her son and his overactive sex life and her demanding boss Mrs B an elderly woman who is never happy with Audrey Peppers efforts and finally her boyfriend Stevie who she regularly meets in various motorway hotels. Sanctuary comes in the shape of Wilton Grange Hotel, where Audrey has been rewarded the chance to go on a French cookery course with a super famous chef, Brad Miller after being awarded dinner lady of the year.
So Audrey escapes to the country side and enjoys fancy french cooking, a charming chef and some new friends. It’s in her new surroundings that Audrey sees another side to her life, a life where she isn’t taken for granted by her spoilt son, who spends his time in bed and realises her true worth, that she is a lovely woman with the world at her feet.
The story is relatable one, a book about finally giving up and putting yourself first, putting your own needs before others. It’s filled with wonderfully refreshing and warm hearted characters, handsome men, petulant children and bad tempered old women and each of these of people provided much humour and entertainment in this lighthearted tale.
I really liked Audrey, the underdog of the story, a kind woman, who spent years struggling and looking after her son, Morgan. When she is given this rare opportunity of this reward, she hesitates before choosing her prize as she’s not used to just thinking about herself. It’s only when Morgan, gives her a list of what he wants for his birthday that she finally wises up.
With an endearing heroine, I thought this story flowed along at a lovely pace. Each chapter is packed with witty and warm moments, that makes curling up with this vibrant book, the perfect afternoon activity.
