The Proposal By Tasmina Perry

The Proposal‘The Proposal’ is the latest book by ‘Sunday Times’ bestselling author, Tasmina Perry.

When Amy Carrell’s wealthy boyfriend ends their relationship just before Christmas, she’s left to nurse her broken heart alone. With nothing to lose she replies to an advertisement requesting a companion for a mysterious ‘Manhattan adventure’ whisked off to New York, with eccentric Georgia Hamilton, Amy experiences a glamorous side of the city that she has never seen before. Along the way Georgia, initiates her protége in the arts of old-school elegance. But as Georgia shares her life lessons, Amy discovers a painful secret in her mentors past. A secret that shattered her future and a secret that only Amy has the power to put it right.

I have read all of Tasmina’s books and I have always enjoyed her racy and exotic stories, but with ‘The Proposal’ I thought this story was a wonderfully classic and charming story that was a lovely change from her previous literary offerings.

The story is seen through the eyes of Georgia and Amy. Georgia is an elderly woman, who has one wish in life, to visit New York. So, not wishing to travel alone, she places an advertisement looking for a travelling companion and newly dumped and looking to return home for the Christmas season, Amy immediately responds to the advert.

On their traveling adventure, the two women from completely sides of life, find an understanding and kinship between the two of them. Amy enjoys showing Georgia New York and showing her favourite parts of the city and in return Georgia advises Amy about behaviour and etiquette in the posh London circles.

The story is spilt into two eras, The first is 1958 when Georgia was a young woman and her mother wanted her to become a debutante to help find herself a young man to settle down with and have some stability and security in life, after her father was killed in the war. But Georgia, has other ideas, fiercely independent, she thinks the notions of debutantes is preposterous and wants to concentrate on her writing and having fun before settling down. Meanwhile in London 2012, struggling dancer Amy is hoping for that one big break and after uncovering a Tiffany’s box in her boyfriends drawer, thinks he is about propose but instead sadly Daniel breaks up with her and Amy wants to flee the city.

Both characters are fabulously interesting, particularly Georgia, as she regales tales of her youth, wild parties, fast cars and of her first love, you couldn’t help but slightly envy the times and fashion. I found her immensely likeable, quietly proud and proper, she was a regal character that leapt out from the pages for me, whereas Amy was a little bit more of fire cracker who got stronger as the story progresses.

A story that I really enjoyed, ‘The Proposal’ is an dazzling and romantic story that will you have hooked from the very start from the dance halls of 1958 to the bright lights of 2012, this poignant and beautifully written tale is most definitely a book that you should say yes to!

You can buy The Proposal from Amazon and is available to buy from good bookshops.
