Chosen is about Dodie, who comes home one evening and finds her mother Stella dead and her younger brother, Seth has been shipped off to New York to live with an unknown aunt and uncle. Dodie follows Seth leaving her now ex-boyfriend, Rob and their son Jake. Once she reaches New York, she enters the world the Brothers and Sisters Cult, where she tries to get to close to Seth but everytime she tries, she is pushed further away.

Unknown to Dodie, one of the founding members of the cult is actually, Stella’s sister Martha. In a parallel narrative, Martha tells the story of living with a troubled sister battling with mental disorders in the 1970’s and discovering the cult, that has taken control of her life.

Chosen is a very dark story with so many troubled characters, many of the scenes are very intense, particularly where Stella kills herself, this setting was particularly graphic and portrayed a terrible sense of lose. Whilst reading this scene, I longed for someone to come in and rescue her.

If you want a story that is gripping, then Chosen is the book for you, but if you are looking for a light read where everyone has a happy ever after, then Chosen is not the book for you.
