The Accidental Proposal by Matt Dunn

The Accidental Proposal book cover

The Accidental Proposal is the latest offering from Matt Dunn following the lives of couple, Ed and Sam and Ed’s best friend, ex soap star Dan Davis.

On a night out at a friend’s wedding, Sam asks Ed if he ever thinks that he will get married, when he says yes, he suddenly comes to the conclusion that they are now engaged. Even though it was Sam that asked the question, he begins to wonder “Maybe she was just asking hypothetically”

But as their big day approaches and Ed goes out to buy an engagement making it all seem so much realistic , Ed begins to feel uneasy in their usually secure relationship with Sam having whispered phone-calls and then when Ed spots her having a drink with an unknown man, his paranoia goes into overdrive. With the insecurities racing through his mind, it seems only right for his manic ex Jane, to turn up on his doorstep wanting to recap on old memories, something that Ed can really do without.

Whilst Ed is trying to keep the bad thoughts at bay, Dan, his best man is determined to give Ed the best stag night ever, resulting in Ed getting severely drunk and waking up to the sound of his bedroom door banging and a second dent in his pillow. Ed can’t remember a thing from the night before and begins to panic wondering, if he’s the cheater in the relationship and not Sam as he had originally thought.

But as the big day looms closer, together Ed and Dan set out to recap the adventures of the stag night as well as find out the identity of the new man in Sam’s life all with wonderfully funny results.

I really enjoyed this book. Matt is wonderful at writing and giving us girls an insight into a man’s mind, especially when it comes to such things as relationship and wedding days. This book had me laughing at so many points, particularly with Dan trying to become a reformed character from the playful womaniser to a man who only wants to be loved and wants to get back together with Polly, the only woman that made him want to commit. A wonderfully lighthearted and warm read.
