Ruby and Ethan were perfect for each other. Until the day they suddenly weren’t. Ten years later, Ruby’s single, having spent the last decade focusing on her demanding career and hectic life in Manhattan. There’s barely time for a trip to England for her little sister’s wedding. And there’s certainly not time to think about seeing Ethan there for the first time in years. But as the family frantically prepare for the big day, Ruby can’t help but wonder if she made the right choice all those years ago? Because there’s nothing like a wedding for stirring up the past.
‘The One That Got Away’ is a deliciously fun story that spans over ten years and is seen from the perspective of separated couple Ruby and Ethan, as the two of them have to see each other for the first time in years as they both attend Ruby’s sisters wedding.
The chapters flow fluidly from past to present times as both Ruby and Ethan recount their early twenties from their first meeting to when things fell apart for the young couple and the present chapters deal with them seeing each other and how their lives have changed. Ruby isn’t where she wanted to be in life meanwhile Ethan has left his job as a bartender and instead is an entrepreneur, the creativity behind a successful app that is taking the world by storm.
Ruby is sweet character, strong willed with family values, she’s enjoying spending time with her family in the English wilds, her sister Piper always wanted to be married in a castle and her fiancee Charlie has granted her wish. As Ruby tends to her sisters every need, she tries to deal with her past facing her and as old feelings return, she begins to wonder what if. Meanwhile, Ethan often wondered what happened to their relationship, why it suddenly fizzled out and hopes that their meeting will finally put old ghosts to rest.
I really enjoyed this story, Melissa’s style of writing is fresh and fun and I thought that the narrative flowed at a lovely pace that made for comfortable and entertaining reading. Filled with witty one liners, outspoken and relatable characters, ‘The One That Got Away’ is a touching and enchanting story about lost love.
