Ella and Micha have been best friends since childhood, until one tragic night shatters their relationship and Ella decides to leave everything behind to start a new life at college, including Micha. But now it’s summer break and Ella is returning home. Ella fears that everything she has worked so hard to hide will resurface especially with Micha living next door. Micha is sexy, smart and confident knows exactly how to get under Ella’s skin. He knows everything about her, including her darkest secrets. And he’s determined to win back the girl he lost, no matter the cost.

I absolutely adored and loved this book, as an fan of teen angst, drama and exploration I could not put this book down. Wonderfully written about the innocence and heartache of love in a sharp and concise style, the story also deals with the more serious issues of life such as mental health and suicide, it approaches with sensitivity the pressure that teenagers have to deal with when a parent is unwell, The story is seen through the perspectives Ella and Micha as they take the tentative steps from friendship to love. Both characters as a pleasure to read, as Ella returns to their town a reformed character, gone is sullen emo and in her place is a quieter more preppier girl who tries to hide her true self and heartache. But as she grows closer to Micha, she finds her old character raising to the surface much to the delight of Micha, who through much merriment and banter reminds her of the good old times before that tragic night when their lives changed forever. As male leads go, Micha is one of the best that I have read in recent times. A caring considerate musician who idolises and loved his best friend, it was hard not to fall for him also.

“The Secret of Ella and Micha” is an powerful and captivating read that had me hooked throughout, wonderfully reminiscent of “So Called Life” my favourite television show whilst I was going through my own teenage angst, Ella and Micha are the Angela Chase and Jordan Catalano of now.
