The Poison Tree book cover

The Poison Tree is the debut novel from new author, Erin Kelly and it is an impressive first book. The Poison Tree tells the story of Karen, a straight A Language student who is taken under the wing of bohemian Biba, who needs her help to translate a German song for her end of year performance thus hiring Karen as her translator, but she has no money to pay her, so she asks Karen to move in with her and her brother Rex.

Karen quickly falls for Biba and Rex and their lust for life and quickly falls forgets about her old life. The three of them spend the Summer together, as friends and lovers until one day everything changes.

Erin is marvellous at creating the bleak, miserable life that Karen leads before she encounters the wild and rebellious Biba and Rex and how colourful her life suddenly becomes with the introduction of the new characters, although she manages to successfully contain the bleakness throughout the twists and turns of the novel.
